How did I get here? Pt I

Right, then.

I guess, I’m a runner inasmuch as I like to run. It’s been the one activity I’ve done consistently on-and-off since 1988. I’ve had my weeks, months and years where I did not run a single step, mind you. But like a good crack habit, I kept coming back.

I like running, but I can’t quite explain why. I think it’s the solitude, or something. Maybe it’s the fact that I do not have to worry about anyone else, when I run. Screw up while playing football or softball or doubles-tennis, and you take down someone else with you, they’re pissed and you feel like an asshole. Cut your run short because you just don’t feel like running and no one gives you shit. There’s a certain comfort in that.

Most people that exercise, are not happy unless they exercise. I’m the opposite: I don’t exercise unless I’m happy (or reasonably so). Thus, during the years I was working at a 60-hour-week job that was The Suck, not much running went on. When I was working at jobs that a) did not take my life from me, and b) I found enjoyable, I exercised more.

Fortunately, at this point in my life, I’m in the latter situation. That, in and of itself, is an amazing thing, considering it being The Great Recession, and all.

Enough about running, let’s talk about biking.
